What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a type of treatment you may need when health problems or injuries make it difficult to move around and perform everyday tasks. It helps you gain strength, improve flexibility and feel less pain. It also helps improve your fitness level and endurance. Physical therapy can help with recovery after surgeries as well. Physical therapy may be used alone or with other treatments. You do not need a referral from your doctor to attend physical therapy, unless your insurance requires it.

The goals of physical therapy include reducing pain, improving mobility, restoring function, preventing injury and enhancing physical performance. It aims to make daily tasks, such as walking, going up stairs, or getting in and out of bed, easier. In many cases, patients can decrease the need for prescription medication or surgery.

What does a physical therapist do?

Your physical therapist will perform a thorough evaluation on you, including assessing your past medical history, current symptoms, activity limitations, muscle strength, flexibility, joint range of motion, joint mobility and musculoskeletal alignment. They will then work with you on a developing a treatment plan. The goals are to help improve mobility, flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination, balance, participation in daily activities, as well as to decrease pain.

Your physical therapy team may use manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, gait training, balance training, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, biofeedback, patient education, and a home exercise program, as indicated, to assist you on your road to recovery and to achieve your therapy goals.

Suzanna M. Simpson

I had a major knee surgery in February which required extensive physical therapy for recovery. I chose to work with Patrick and the team at MedX for my physical therapy. I was extremely nervous on my first visit and likely not the easiest patient to work with. Patrick was extremely patient with me, but also firm in his expectations of what I needed to do to aid in my own recovery. That combination helped me tremendously and with each visit there was marked improvement. Kara was also fantastic to work with. She was encouraging and firm when she needed to be. Due to the level of care I received, I didn't just make a full recovery, but found myself in better shape than I was before surgery. Due to the education provided by Patrick and the team, I continued coming to MedX as a member and still do to this day. I have lost 31 pounds and am in the best shape of my life. I am looking forward to taking on even more challenges in the future. I am where I am today thanks to Patrick and the team at MedX!
